Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming global education, yet limited empirical research has examined its influence within Nigerian universities. This study investigates the impact of AI on the digital literacy and academic levels of undergraduates in Nigerian universities. A quantitative survey design was employed, utilizing data from 480 distributed questionnaires. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation and multiple regression. Findings reveal a significant positive relationship between AI usage and the digital literacy levels of undergraduates in Nigerian universities (r = 0.813). Furthermore, a significant relationship exists between AI and the students' academic levels (r = 0.456). Finally, digital literacy, academic level, and gender jointly contribute to the overall literacy levels of these undergraduates, collectively explaining 38.7% of the variance (Adjusted R² = 0.3759). The study concludes that AI, when used confidently and effectively, enhances both digital literacy and academic levels. Strengthening AI infrastructure, alongside digital and academic support systems, is recommended to maximize these benefits and ensure equitable access in Nigerian education.
